Our History:

The son of a son of a retailer.

We are a family owned and operated business with a long history.  In 1857 Johannes Diehl, a long time merchant, left Europe with his family for the promise of America.  While most of his dreams were fulfilled and he became a merchant of note in downtown Baltimore; he was unable to find comfortable shoes for his growing family.  In Germany, they knew, 'the shape of the shoe should match the shape of the human foot.'

Dennis Diehl continued the family tradition and the search for comfortable shoes when he went into business in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1978.  "I must have looked like the 'thinker' when trying on my first pair of Birkenstocks," said Dennis...

The rest is history.

On September 19, 1998, Sharonlee, herself, a decendant of a Jamaican retailer, and Dennis joined in holy wedlock and began their mission of 'saving the world one foot at a time.'  Sharonlee took off her stiletto heels and opened a specialty shoe store which, as the name implied, carried just Birkenstock in their hometown of Rehoboth Beach, DE.

The tradition remains.

In 2003, Sharonlee's daughter Elizabeth and her husband Mark Evans began selling comfort shoes at the Birkenstock store on The Avenue at White Marsh in Maryland.  "Every time I see her try on a new shoe, I remember 'the thinker' and now she does too," says Dennis of Elizabeth.  A second location opened in the new Hunt Valley Towne Centre in June 2005, under the direction of Elizabeth and Mark.

We believe you need a little earth between you and a hard planet.  While Birkenstock provides a healthy solution; sometimes you just need a few more choices.  For those times, for whatever reason, you cannot wear Birkenstock, we are now pleased to offer:
